One of the legendary events in the Vespa world has made a successful comeback: the Audax International Race for Women’s Teams. The sixth edition was held on Saturday 30 June 2018 in Milan (a first non-competitive commemorative tranche with the second tranche on Sunday 1 July; a total of 173 km, with time checks), organised by the Milan Vespa Club (with the support of the Vespa World Club, Vespa Club d’Italia and the City of Milan).
This is the return of an event that began in the early 1950s and established itself as one of the most important moments in Vespa history. It was 1 June 1952 when one hundred women Vespa riders from all over Europe left Milan to take part in a challenge that took them to the banks of Lake Como, then back to Milan the following day.
Events like this helped create the myth of the universality of the Vespa and affirm the values of freedom, friendship, and independence that the world’s most popular scooter has promoted across continents and down the generations.
Vespa Shoes & Bags (already present at the previous Vespa meeting: the XVIII 500km Audax at the Monza motor-racing circuit on 19-20 May) was of course present at this extraordinary event, and provided each of the 60 participants (who came from all over Italy and a number of European countries) with a pair of Freccia (means “arrow”) sneakers, from the Vespa Shoes & Bags 2018 Spring/Summer collection. Freccia is a shoe whose simple soft leather upper is combined with a sole with an irreverent hi-tech look. The element around the heel maximises stability and suggests the style of the rear of a Vespa scooter; the sole is completed with a honey-coloured tread, inspired by the design of the tyres used during the 1960s and 1970s.
